From Politico sweet music to so many of us:
The lone female member of House Republican leadership is under siege in D.C. and back home in Washington state. In Congress, several fellow GOP members are pining for her job, questioning her effectiveness as chairwoman of the conference and weighing whether to challenge her. At the same time, McMorris Rodgers has suddenly found herself at risk of losing her seat altogether — a Republican in a blue-trending state with a Democratic wave potentially on its way.
Although the article backs off somewhat from the loud headline, there is no doubt that McMorris Rodgers is not going to have a cakewalk come November.
Democrat Lisa Brown -formerly the first Democratic woman to hold the position of state Senate Majority Leader and former chancellor of Washington State University- is giving McMorris Rodgers a true run for her money. She has turned a solid R to leaning R. And there’s a recent poll-
The independent poll released on Wednesday showed McMorris Rodgers leading Brown by 44 to 38 percent. But the poll has a margin of error of 5 percent, meaning the result could be within the margin. The poll found 16 percent of voters were undecided and 3 percent preferred another candidate.
Lisa Brown is a well-timed candidate with her experience in the Washington state legislature- house and senate representing the 3rd LD during contentious times and her experience as chancellor of WSU- aiding the expansion of the health sciences and research-
Her efforts contributed to the successful accreditation creation of a second public medical school in the state of Washington, expanding health care where it's needed most across Eastern Washington.
Under Lisa’s leadership, WSU Spokane doubled vital research into addictions, cancer and neurological diseases, and helped create a teaching health clinic which trains medical residents who serve patients from Colville to Pullman.
(Colville is McMorris Rodgers’ “home town”. And btw, though Politico says she is, she is not a former farmer!)
Lisa Brown has serious name recognition in Eastern Washington as a person who has worked hard and has accomplishments to show for it.
The number one issue for voters this year is health care and McMorris Rodgers helped to spearhead repeal of the ACA, prompting a lot of “repeal and replace Cathy” signs around Spokane.
This year it’s not wishful thinking to believe McMorris Rodgers could go down to defeat. While the district has been solid red the district’s big city, Spokane, continues to grow and the demographics are changing. And I can see it from my front porch. And Lisa was the representative from the 3rd LD which is Spokane.
Lisa Brown is raising funds and getting serious support which has prompted McMorris Rodgers’ bff *speaker of the house* to open a field office in Spokane.
In a statement issued Saturday, the McMorris Rodgers campaign downplayed the significance of the poll and expressed confidence in their re-election effort.
“Cathy has a proven record reducing taxes and fighting against federal government overreach, while Lisa Brown is not a ‘generic’ Democrat but an ultra-liberal, big spender who raised taxes and college tuition repeatedly,” said Emily Strode, a campaign spokeswoman, in the prepared statement.
Elway stressed that the sample size for the poll was extremely small – only about 100 of the poll’s respondents said they lived in Eastern Washington. Still, as a pollster, he called the results “tantalizing.”
I bold that part because that’s the line McMorris has used against her previous serious opponents from the very beginning of her run for Congress. Next she’ll throw in the dreaded Pelosi scary monster, I have no doubt since she has used that one before too. Which makes this quote even more amusing
“Posturing about decisions we’ll make after the election is naive, divisive, and it’s distracting from the Conference’s shared goals of finishing our work in the House and keeping this majority," McMorris Rodgers said in a statement, declining to address questions about her future in leadership.
uh huh...whatever.
I don’t want to have a jinxing affect, but I am hopeful that a real change can happen this year. Lord knows we all need McMorris out of office.
